Start into 20th EWHL Season

Sep 25, 2023 | EWHL

European Women’s Hockey League (EWHL): this weekend the EWHL starts into its 20th season. While the Supercup preliminary round will be played in 3 tournaments with 3 teams each also the first two league games are scheduled this weekend when Tauron Metropolia Silesia and EVB Eagles South Tyrol play each other in Katowice…

In 2004-05 the EWHL was founded with the name Elite Women’s Hockey League which was changed later into European Women’s Hockey League, first medallists were Sabres Vienna (AUT/gold), HK Terme Maribor (SLO/silver) and Agordo Hockey (ITA/bronze). In meantime 19 seasons were played with the following 15 countries involved: Austria, Belarus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland (the last two only Cup). Champions so far were EHV Sabres Vienna (AUT / 6x), KMH Budapest/Hokiklub Budapest (HUN / 5x), HC Slavia Prague (CZE / 2x), EV Bolzano Eagles (ITA / 2x), HC Slovan Bratislava (SVK / 2x), Pantera Minsk (BLR / 1x), ESC Planegg (GER / 1x). Other medallists were DEC Salzburg Eagles, Neuberg Highlanders and The Ravens Salzburg (all AUT), MAC Budapest (HUN), HC SKP Bratislava (SVK), OSC Berlin (GER), HK Terme Maribor (SLO), Agordo Hockey (ITA) and Aisulu Almaty (KAZ).

EWHL League:

Due to the postponement of the WWIA in China to August the league start is also later than in previous years. While most clubs will play now the Supercup games first, only two teams will start into the league already this weekend – Tauron Metropolia Silesia will play in Katowice against the Eagles South Tyrol. This duel had already opened last season – there the Italians grabbed 5 out of 6 possible points when playing twice in Bolzano. These results decided in the end about the 8th play off spot in favour for the Eagles. This year these games will be played in Poland and the home team will for sure try everything to go for a revenge.
