EWHL League Champion 2023-24: HC SKP Bratislava
European Women’s Hockey League: after two thrilling final games HC SKP Bratislava took the EWHL Championship Trophy – the latter went for the third time in EWHL history to Slovakia’s capital after 2005-06 and 2006-07…
On the other side Hokiklub Budapest could not defend the title successfully after 5 consecutive wins from 2018-19 to 2022-23. Which means that the Sabres will stay the one and only EWHL team to win 6 times the gold medals. Anyway the duel between HKB and SKP showed women’s hockey on European top level and was thrilling from the first to the last minute. Bratislava’s 2-1 win on Friday was equalized by Madeline Leidt’s powerplay goal in 7th minute of the second game already. After that it became more and more a battle between the two goalies. HKB had more shots while SKP also missed some great chances for deciding the game. Which they did 4 minutes and 39 seconds before an already expected overtime would have started.
In the bronze medal games MAC Budapest won against EC Graz Huskies with a total score of 11-7 after two games. So 18 great and mostly beautiful goals show on one side the offensive power on both sides but also the defensive weaknesses. And while after the 8-3 in game one (1) in the Merkur arena in Graz everyone already expected MAC to “play the medals home” in second. But a 0-3 after first period shocked not only the home team but also their fans. Because in that moment the Huskies were just 2 goals away from an unbelievable “sport wonder”. However – MAC came back to the game by scoring 3 unanswered goals. A onetime in power play decided the game in the end for the league newcomer (3-4), but the result was not enough to turn the series…
